About

Oanh-Nhi Nguyen is a filmmaker and activist with 10 years of working for gender and racial justice. She writes stories honoring Asian and Asian American women, specifically how intergenerational trauma and resilience impact the trajectory of their lives. Her stories focus on women and girls’ power to actualize their dreams and to build anew.

Her first episodic documentary, TAKING ROOT: Southeast Asian Resettlement Stories in Philadelphia, is an official selection for the Tribeca Festival in 2023. Her comedy pilot, UNACCEPTABLE, was accepted into the 2022 Athena’s Writers Lab.

Oanh-Nhi is currently a Directing Fellow at the AFI Conservatory.

Before filmmaking, Oanh-Nhi specialized in storytelling, digital organizing, and philanthropy. Her interest in ending violence against women and girls started in college, where she developed a documentary on sexual violence survivors and organized a youth-led violence prevention program. As a former digital organizer, Oanh-Nhi has mobilized thousands of Asian Americans online. She has also created funds to resource nonprofits, totaling $11 million for girls and women of color and AAPIs.
